Vintage Bakelite Ashtray From the S. S. Del Sud, Delta Line, New Orleans. 1950s
The Mississippi Shipping Company of New Orleans introduced three revolutionary passenger-cargo ships to its South American services in the post-war years of the 1940s. In keeping with the company trade name, “Delta Line”, their three new ships were all given “Del” names. Thus the ships were named SS Del Norte, SS Del Sud and SS Del Mar, and they were without a doubt the most distinctive and revolutionary vessels in their time: 1946 - 1967.
This black Bakelite ashtray from the S. S. Sud, is in remarkable condition, maybe even unused, and it’s an interesting example of the many uses for Bakelite.
It is 5” across and 1” high. The gold imprinting says “Delta Line, New Orleans”and is slightly worn.
The top of this piece has multiple groves for cigarettes, in addition to a slot for a pack of matches. Please look carefully at the pictures and ask me before you bid if you have any questions.
