    Description

American South African Line (Farrell Line) - A fold-out (17" by 22") deck plan dated September 1941 for the new AFRICAN COMET, AFRICAN METEOR, and AFRICAN PLANET, nicknamed "The Heavenly Trio".
Too bad these George Sharp-designed beauties never sailed in commercial service.
Parts of five decks are shown in isometric style. With spacious cabins (all with private baths), luxurious public rooms, and a tile swimming pool, these C3 passenger ships would have been a delight to sail in. An illustration shows off handsome combo-liner looks.
American President Lines, Delta Lines, Moore McCormack, and United States Lines all had orders in for "C3-P" combo liners when World War 2 erupted.
In fact, the AFRICAN COMET was fully completed and elegantly decorated, ready for her maiden voyage within days, when the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor in December 1941. She was quickly stripped of all her finery and converted into a troopship. Her two sisters were completed for military duty. All three survived the war, but only the ex-AFRICAN PLANET remained sailing for the Navy. The other two were laid up, never to sail again. All went to the breakers in the 1960s.
The late ship historian Mark Goldberg dedicated a detailed chapter to these vessels in "Caviar & Cargo: The C3 Passengers Ships", available on Nautiques.
    Very good condition.
