Arosa Line: A fold-out (15" by 16") interiors brochure from the short time in the mid-1950s that this ship sailed as the AROSA SUN.Inside are twenty color interior photos. And what interiors the AROSA SUN had!
The ship was launched in 1930 as the FELIX ROUSEL and sailed on the long-haul route from Marseilles to Indo-China. Owner Messageries Maritimes outfitted First Class (and to a lesser extend Tourist Class) with dramatic, Indo-Asian-Deco interiors, most of which survived the transition to Arosa.
Here you can see glamour from a by-gone era peeking through what was an immigrant ship by the 1950s. First Class photos show two views of the Dining Room, entrance to the Dining Room, Bar, Souvenir Shop, Promenade Deck, Children's Playroom, Indoor Swimming Pool, entrance to the Lounge, Lounge, a deluxe cabin, and a private bathroom. Of special note are the gilded piano with carved elephants as feet looking fit for Louis XIV himself and the large, sculptured seven-fingered hands holding fans at the bottom of the grand stairway to the dining room.
Tourist Class was not as dramatic but still stylish. Views include a single-berth cabin, Cocktail Bar, Verandah Lounge, Bar, Dining Room, Lounge and Bar, and a double-berth cabin.
The ship only sailed a few years before Arosa went bankrupt. She should have gone to the breakers, but instead became a floating hostel in Holland, a role she played until heading to the breakers in 1974. I wonder if the delightful decor stayed with her to the end?
Good condition.
